From the book proposal:

The book casts a spotlight on the lives of each of Muhammad's wives illuminating first her face, then the wider scene. The seven chapters demystify the women who stood in the daybreak of Islam.
This nonfiction biography connects the Western reader with the most famous women in the Muslim world. The book's unusual format, sometimes called prosimetrum, employs narrative prose interspersed with short, lyric poems. The prose informs, the poetry creates intimacy and drops the reader deep into the story.
Untold: A History of the Wives of Prophet Muhammad is a scholarly work, informed by the oldest traditional sources. At the same time, it has a rare story-telling quality that captures the inquisitive reader who does not have the inclination to read scholarly texts. This book thoroughly speaks to a subject simply unknown to the Western reader and little known in the culture of its roots.

Saadi -- Dr Neil Douglas-Klotz, author of The Sufi Book of Life and co-author of The Tent of Abraham writes:
"Untold: A History of the Wives of Prophet Muhammad" takes us on Taman Kahn's moving, personal journey of discovery, to unveil the hidden history of the wives of the Prophet Muhammad. The book frees the authentic voice of these women, who came from many different backgrounds and who played an essential role in the origins of Islam. Ms Kahn steers a middle course between Western religious prejudice and uncritical hagiography by finding the poetry hidden between the lines of reported history, itself written mostly by men. As such, this book is part of a larger movement that seeks to reclaim the voices of women prophets and saints of all traditions."

Prayer Beads

Salaams friends, A few people have been asking for a chance to make teshbi ( prayer beads) together. Let's gather on Saturday, Dec. 5 at Byzantium, on High St. in the Short North, right across from Yoga on High at about 3rd Avenue. There you can buy beads, wire, crimps and everything you might need except tassel materials. (I like to make tassels out of cotton embroidery floss, I have quite a lot but if you have a color that you really want, you can find it at a fabric or craft store.)
After getting supplies, we can all go to Zawiyya al Mu'min, 1000 Urlin ave., apt. 1507. if you already have all the supplies you need you can meet us there - but be sure to call to make sure we're back - 614-446-3337
Peace and insha'allah, see you next Saturday,
Hilal

An open letter from Imam Bilal Hyde

Bismillah ir Rahmaan ir Raheem

...during these difficult economic times and the ongoing recession ... many citizens of this country of the United States of America, and around the world, must make some difficult choices and necessary adjustments. But there have been many times in the history of the human race, and there may be many future times, when the sacrifices, hardships, and sufferings on life's long journey are much more intense than they are at present. There are very few who have not only endured times like these but even thrived. For generations they have served as models for moral behavior. I am speaking of the Prophets, Messengers, and Saints among us—the true Lovers of God, whose pure Light has guided countless multitudes out of the depths of darkness.

These holy beings have always stood up for honesty even when all those around them were liars. They have stood for integrity, even when all those around them were deceivers. They have stood for justice and fairness, even when all those around them were oppressors and hypocrites. But most of all they have always stood for truth, as they saw it, no matter what the consequences. These are the best examples of moral courage. I do not claim to be one of these, but rather I, like so many others, have been challenged to take up the banner of their cause, and be guided by their perfected example, their model for the human race, even in these dark and difficult times.

...All hardships really come from God, Who wants to test human beings with the purifying fire of Perfect Love. All people suffer, but there are those who see these difficulties as Divinely inspired trials, through which we must pass in order that the higher spirit (ruh) is purified of the lower soul (nafs). These few are the Saints of God, the Friends and true Lovers of God and we are always praying for them with our broken hearts and tears, that they may intercede for us with the light of their perfected deeds, words, and prayers.

This is my prayer also: for you, for myself, and for our family.

Wa salaam,

Bruce Bilal Franklin Hyde ( from Sufis Without Borders )

Do not despair because the Beloved drives you away: Zikr Allah 7:30 pm November 21 at Zawiyya alMu'min

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Say, do not despair because the Beloved drives you away; if
He drives you away today, will He not call you back tomorrow?
If He shuts the door on you, do not go away; be patient
there, for after patience He will seat you in the place of honour.
And if He bars against you all ways and passages, He will
show you a secret way, which no man knows.
Is it not the case that when the butcher cuts off the head of
a sheep with his knife, he does not abandon what he has slain,
but first slays, and then draws?
When no more breath remains to the sheep, he fills it with
his own breath; you will see whither God's breath will bring you!
I spoke this as a parable; else, His generosity slays no man,
rather it rescues him from slaying.
He gives all the kingdom of Solomon to a single ant; He
bestows both worlds, and does not startle a single heart.
My heart has travelled round the world and found none
like Him; whom does He resemble? Whom does He resemble?
Ah, silence! For without speech He gives to all of this wine
to taste, He gives to taste, He gives to taste, He gives to taste.
