Rumi's Urs, 12/17/09
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
O my noble friends, slaughter this cow, if you wish to raise up the spirit of insight. I died to being mineral and growth began. I died to vegetable growth and attained to the state of animals. I died from animality and became Adam: why then should I fear? When have I become less by dying? Next I shall die to being a human being, so that I may soar and lift up my head among the angels. Yet I must escape even from that angelic state: everything is perishing except His Face.* Once again I shall be sacrificed, dying to the angelic; I shall become that which could never be imagined — I shall become nonexistent. Nonexistence sings its clear melody, Truly, unto Him shall we return!**
Rumi departed earthly life on 5 Jumadi II, 672 A.H (according to the Islamic lunar calendar), Dec 17, 1273 A.D. (according to the Christian calendar). His death is referred to by Persians as "vesal", meaning "union (with the Beloved)", while in the Mevlevi Sufi tradition,the expression "shab-i aroos" is used, a phrase meaning "the wedding night" -- the night of Rumi's marriage to the Beloved. (The Sufi tradition of referring to the death of a Sufi saint as "urs" -- a wedding -- predates Rumi, and is still used in Sufi circles.)
Please join the Columbus Sufi Circle on the 736th anniversary of the wedding night of this great teacher, who has inspired us all and many others from that time to this and into the future, inspired us to be seekers on the path that leads to God.
We will sing, dance, whirl, read poetry from our master, eat sweets, talk, drink coffee and tea and juice.
Please “ Come,come, whoever you are, even though you’ve broken your vows 10,000times, come and yet again come.”
Tamam
(feel free to forward where appropriate)
From the book proposal:
The book casts a spotlight on the lives of each of Muhammad's wives illuminating first her face, then the wider scene. The seven chapters demystify the women who stood in the daybreak of Islam.
This nonfiction biography connects the Western reader with the most famous women in the Muslim world. The book's unusual format, sometimes called prosimetrum, employs narrative prose interspersed with short, lyric poems. The prose informs, the poetry creates intimacy and drops the reader deep into the story.
Untold: A History of the Wives of Prophet Muhammad is a scholarly work, informed by the oldest traditional sources. At the same time, it has a rare story-telling quality that captures the inquisitive reader who does not have the inclination to read scholarly texts. This book thoroughly speaks to a subject simply unknown to the Western reader and little known in the culture of its roots.
Saadi -- Dr Neil Douglas-Klotz, author of The Sufi Book of Life and co-author of The Tent of Abraham writes:
"Untold: A History of the Wives of Prophet Muhammad" takes us on Taman Kahn's moving, personal journey of discovery, to unveil the hidden history of the wives of the Prophet Muhammad. The book frees the authentic voice of these women, who came from many different backgrounds and who played an essential role in the origins of Islam. Ms Kahn steers a middle course between Western religious prejudice and uncritical hagiography by finding the poetry hidden between the lines of reported history, itself written mostly by men. As such, this book is part of a larger movement that seeks to reclaim the voices of women prophets and saints of all traditions."
An open letter from Imam Bilal Hyde
Bismillah ir Rahmaan ir Raheem
...during these difficult economic times and the ongoing recession ... many citizens of this country of the United States of America, and around the world, must make some difficult choices and necessary adjustments. But there have been many times in the history of the human race, and there may be many future times, when the sacrifices, hardships, and sufferings on life's long journey are much more intense than they are at present. There are very few who have not only endured times like these but even thrived. For generations they have served as models for moral behavior. I am speaking of the Prophets, Messengers, and Saints among us—the true Lovers of God, whose pure Light has guided countless multitudes out of the depths of darkness.
These holy beings have always stood up for honesty even when all those around them were liars. They have stood for integrity, even when all those around them were deceivers. They have stood for justice and fairness, even when all those around them were oppressors and hypocrites. But most of all they have always stood for truth, as they saw it, no matter what the consequences. These are the best examples of moral courage. I do not claim to be one of these, but rather I, like so many others, have been challenged to take up the banner of their cause, and be guided by their perfected example, their model for the human race, even in these dark and difficult times.
...All hardships really come from God, Who wants to test human beings with the purifying fire of Perfect Love. All people suffer, but there are those who see these difficulties as Divinely inspired trials, through which we must pass in order that the higher spirit (ruh) is purified of the lower soul (nafs). These few are the Saints of God, the Friends and true Lovers of God and we are always praying for them with our broken hearts and tears, that they may intercede for us with the light of their perfected deeds, words, and prayers.
This is my prayer also: for you, for myself, and for our family.
Wa salaam,
Bruce Bilal Franklin Hyde ( from Sufis Without Borders )
Do not despair because the Beloved drives you away: Zikr Allah 7:30 pm November 21 at Zawiyya alMu'min
Say, do not despair because the Beloved drives you away; if
He drives you away today, will He not call you back tomorrow?
If He shuts the door on you, do not go away; be patient
there, for after patience He will seat you in the place of honour.
And if He bars against you all ways and passages, He will
show you a secret way, which no man knows.
Is it not the case that when the butcher cuts off the head of
a sheep with his knife, he does not abandon what he has slain,
but first slays, and then draws?
When no more breath remains to the sheep, he fills it with
his own breath; you will see whither God's breath will bring you!
I spoke this as a parable; else, His generosity slays no man,
rather it rescues him from slaying.
He gives all the kingdom of Solomon to a single ant; He
bestows both worlds, and does not startle a single heart.
My heart has travelled round the world and found none
like Him; whom does He resemble? Whom does He resemble?
Ah, silence! For without speech He gives to all of this wine
to taste, He gives to taste, He gives to taste, He gives to taste.
"Mystical conversation on mystical subjects"
from The Essentail Rumi by Coleman Barks p. 76
We will gather at the Shalem Center
881 High Street, Suite 206. Worthington, OH 43085
On the 2nd & 4th Tuesdays of each month
Aug. 11 & 25, Sept. 8 & 22, Oct. 13 & 27
From 6:30-8:00
“The word Kashf means 'opening,' and it is used by the Sufis with
meaning that the heart is, as a rule, a closed book and the one to
whom it becomes open can read it like an open book…What gives one
insight into another is, in the first place, his sympathy. The seer
first develops the quality of love. He whose heart is kindled with the
love of God is capable of the love of humanity.” Hazrat Inayat Khan
We will begin with the prayers of Hazrat Inayat Khan, followed by the
elemental breaths and a 20 min. meditation. Then we will focus on the
'gathas,' sacred writings from Inayat Khan with commentary by Samuel
Lewis. These will be accompanied by wazifas, ryazat and sohbet.
Let us fall in love again
and scatter gold dust all over the world.
Let us become a new spring
and feel the breeze drift in the heavens' scent.
let the grace from within sustain us.
Let us carve gems out of our stony hearts
and let them light our path to Love.
and we are blessed by its light.
We invite you to a special event. Pam Spence has worked to bring this offering to Unity in Community in Delaware and we look forward to this Sunday.
We like to think of this as an "interspiritual event" --- meaning we join together to experience (not think about or talk about) chants, prayers and/or movements from various spiritual streams.
Samuel Lewis, the Sufi teacher who founded the Dances of Universal Peace in the 1960s, held a vision that if people could "eat, dance, and pray together" across the differences (and WITH the richness of diversity) of our religious orientations, then this kind of experiential spiritual practice was one way (a mystic's path) to peace.
The Dances of Universal Peace (www.dancesofuniversalpeace.org)
are simple, meditative and joyous circle dances that celebrate the variety of religious traditions on earth. All chants and melodies and simple movements will be taught. No particular musical skills or movement skills are needed. All that is asked is you come with open and willing minds and hearts.
Everyone is welcome! It doesn't matter what your particular religious tradition or background is. All paths are welcome! Children are welcome to join the circle as they wish.
We look forward to seeing you there!
Zikr Allah, new date and time: Friday, March 6, 7:00 pm
- ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~
- Just as staying at home is easy for some,
- traveling comes easy to others.
- Each of us was made for some particular work,
- and the desire for that work has been placed in our hearts.
- How should hand and foot be set in motion without desire?
- If you see your desire leading toward Heaven,
- unfold your wings to claim it;
- but if you see your desire bends to the earth,
- keep lamenting.
- The wise weep in the beginning;
- the foolish beat their heads at the end.
- Discern the end from the beginning
- so that you may not be repenting
- when the Day of Reckoning arrives.
- ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
- Let us fall in love again
- and scatter gold dust all over the world.
- Let us become a new spring
- and feel the breeze drift in the heavens' scent.
- Let us dress the earth in green,
- and like the sap of a young tree
- let the grace from within sustain us.
- Let us carve gems out of our stony hearts
- and let them light our path to Love.
- The glance of Love is crystal clear
- and we are blessed by its light.
Light body Practice and Zikr, 1/23 at 7pm
Oh God, give me light in my heart,
and light in my touch,
and light in my hearing,
and light in my sight,
and light in my feeling,
and light in my body,
and light before me,
and light behind me.
Give me, I pray Thee,
Light on my right hand,
and light on my left hand,
and light above me,
and light beneath me.
Oh Lord, increase light within me, and give me light and
illuminate me.
Amen
